Develop Your Baby's Brain
Print PDF
In the last 10 years or so, scientists have discovered that it takes three years for your baby's brain to grow to the approximate size of an adult brain. But how well your baby's brain develops depends on the genes he or she was born with, relationships with others, experiences and health and nutrition. In the first year of your baby's life, many changes will take place; here are some things to expect.

Your baby will:

Birth to 3 months

  • Pay special attention to faces and enjoys listening to human voices.
  • Be comforted by being held.
  • Move arms and legs.
  • Cry a lot to tell you what he or she needs.
  • Coo and vocalize.
  • Smile when you speak to him or her.
  • Sleep five to six hours at night and take three naps a day.

3 to 6 months

  • Squeal, coo, smile and laugh.
  • Roll from stomach to back and back to stomach.
  • Hold a rattle and bring it to the mouth and from hand to hand.
  • Sit with support.
  • Bring feet to mouth and grab toes.
  • Hold head erect, raise body on hands, arch back and rock when on stomach.
  • Cry when left alone in a room.
  • Recognize strangers and maybe begin to have some anxiety.

6 to12 months

  • Sit up without help.
  • Scoot around on his or her stomach and eventually crawl.
  • Begin to pull up holding onto furniture and walk around it.
  • Wave goodbye.
  • Repeat sounds you make.
  • Look at and study things for a long time.
  • Sit down from a standing position.
  • Walk if hands are held.
  • Hold a cup.
  • Play pat-a-cake.
