Community Issues

  • Minneapolis has 22 percent of the metro area’s population (over 1 million and counting) and 54 percent of the poverty population.
  • This county's population is aging.  By 2030 there will be more seniors than school-age children. Currently, over 70 percent of residents over age 65 live in the suburbs and more than 30 percent live alone.
  • Last year, Hennepin County residents made over 114,000 calls to United Way 2-1-1™, our community resource and referral line. More than 75 percent of referrals made were for assistance with meeting basic needs like food and shelter.

Our Response

  • Our Start Saving program helps low-income families achieve economic self-sufficiency.  Every dollar contributed is matched by 3 dollars.
  • The Minneapolis Beacons Project is a collaboration to improve academic, social and life skills development of low-income youth. Supported by United Way, the program is available in 13 schools and serves over 5,000 youth.
  • Last year, 677,600 meals were served to people in need by United Way-supported programs.
  • United Way 2-1-1™ is a free and confidential helpline available 24/7.  Just dial 2-1-1 or 651-291-0211.
