Apprentice-style Competition to Help Seniors in North Minneapolis—June 18-22

June 2008—United Way teamed up with Urban Financial Services Mark I Emerging Leaders Program during an annual conference in the Twin Cities. 

The MARK I program partnered with United Way Caring Connection to help North Minneapolis senior citizens with home repair work. Youth from across the country participated in an Apprentice Show type of competition during the June 18–22 convention.

BCT Partners President and CEO, 2005 NBC Apprentice Show winner Dr. Randal Pinkett was the featured judge.

Community Peace-building Effort Led by Youth in North Minneapolis—April 12, 13

April 2008—youthrive, the Upper Midwest affiliate of the international PeaceJam Foundation, led a community peace-building effort as part of a service project for the PeaceJam conference on April 12-13 at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa and his daughter, Naomi, were in the Twin Cities for the PeaceJam conference for youth.  Activities included the service project, a peace parade, a service project expo, HIV/AIDS awareness, awards presentation and more.

In addition to a grant from United Way, support was made by E. Ronald and Patricia Parish, the leadership support of the General Mills Foundation, Cub Foods Broadway, The Minneapolis Foundation, Olive Garden Restaurants, Delta Dental of Minnesota, Grotto Foundation, Northwest Area Foundation, Comcast and the Minnesota Department of Education.

Banner Year for Greater Twin Cities United Way

March 27, 2008—United Way donors generously stepped up to the plate in 2007.  A total of $89.5 million was raised, surpassing the goal of $87.8 million.  The total includes $1.1 million in grants and endowments.  In addition to financial support generated, $5.2 million in volunteer time was donated.

United Way's workplace campaigns had stellar results.  General Mills donated the largest gift ever of $7.3 million, Northwest Airlines employee giving increased by 16 percent and Wells Fargo added over 1,000 new donors.  Cargill also increased its giving by double-digits for the third year in a row.

Deborah Hopp, 2007 campaign chair, said, "I'm amazed by the people...who put their best and most creative effort behind the campaign every year.  This community found a way to achieve our goals.  A huge thank you to everyone."

Land O'Lakes President and CEO Chris Policinski will lead the 2008 campaign.
