Success Story: LaRainea
More than 'just' a car: it keeps her family independent

LaRainea"I believe in working," said LaRainea, who’s been at her job in the mortgage industry for over five years.

Four years ago getting to her job, or anywhere else, wasn’t easy because her car was unreliable.  It was, as she called it, "a piece of junk."

At the time, LaRainea, a single mom, was also shuttling two little ones (then 7 and 2) to and from school and daycare, doctor appointments and other necessary errands.  Getting to work often seemed like mission impossible, especially in the harsh Minnesota winter, which is notorious for "killing" unreliable vehicles.

A fellow church member told her about Lease-to-Own, a United Way partner program.  The program is offered through several partner agencies, including Episcopal Community Services, and was designed to help low-income families overcome transportation obstacles.

Donated by 3M and GE Fleet Services, the vehicles are more than just a car: they represent independence and a normal life.  And while the cars aren't luxury vehicles, they are reliable.  Without transportation, many families would not be able to keep employment, maintain a home or keep their family together. Lease-to-Own participants must take financial management classes and car maintenance classes and fully-insure and maintain their vehicle.  After successful completion of the two-year program, which includes monthly lease payments, the cars can then be purchased for $1.  LaRainea purchased a 2000 Grand Prix.

Four years and 40,000 miles later, LaRainea’s car is still dependable and she continues to improve her life.  She plans to finish her bachelor’s degree and hopes to buy a home some day.

United Way’s Agenda for Lasting Change focuses on 10 measurable goals in our three focus areas: Meeting Basic Needs, Supporting Health and Independence and Nurturing Children and Families. One goal is improving the financial stability of 40,000 individuals by 2009.
